Be Informed Before You Get Pierced

The prevalence of all manner of body piercings has made much more than simple ear piercings main-stream and acceptable. There are however, some very important guidelines and facts that must be considered prior to any form of body piercing in general.

First and foremost, if you are a person who is prone to infection, then body piercing is probably not a great idea for you. Some people even develop scarring for simple ear piercings. If this describes you, please consult your physician prior to considering any kind of body piercing at all, and even if you are not prone to infection, a simple consultation with your doctor before attempting a body piercing is a good idea regardless.

With that being said, the majority of body piercings are performed in sterile facilities by trained professionals with virtually no complications of any kind. It is of great benefit to at least have an idea of some of the things that can go wrong with some very common piercing sites on the human body before moving forward with your own however.

According to doctors who treat the infections common after body piercings, the site most effected by infection occurs in women who have had nipple piercings. The nipple area is the main point of access and egress to the mammary ducts. Errors in communication can occur between these ducts and a pierced nipple, to the degree that women can experience breast infections in the form of a painful breast abscess that can happen at any time, even after the piercing has been removed for months or years. Surgery may be required to remove the duct and some breast tissue, or the infection can even leave the breast deformed.

A second high risk area for body piercings can occur in the tongue and lip area. Aside from the obvious infection and healing issues, a commonly misinformed side-effect has to do with oral hygiene and dental complications due to reactions in the mouth and teeth to the metal used in the jewelry in these kinds of piercings.

As with all body piercings, strict hygiene and after-care can easily prevent many kinds of infections and serious side-effects. Research tattoo studios in your area and choose wisely from those that are licensed, sterile facilities only and who employ the highest quality, licensed tattoo artists trained in sterile procedures and patient after-care.

Underground Tattooing Taboo Nationwide

In other parts of the country, like Utah, there are fewer laws and guidelines for tattoo shop owners regarding sterile procedures and what is considered underground tattooing. The health risks of tattooing in less than sterile situations and by unlicensed or underground tattoo artists are considerable, in addition to the fact that many will tattoo minors.

The following article concerns the recent changes proposed in Provo, Utah, and are an indication of the tide turning on a national level in this area of the tattoo industry.

Board of Health considers 'underground' body artists
November 23, 2010
Heidi Toth - Daily Herald

PROVO -- An underground movement of unlicensed body artists throughout the county has tattoo and piercing shop owners worried for their businesses and their customers' health.

"People think it's OK to tattoo out of the home," said Body & Soul Tattoo owner Melissa Shaw at Monday's Board of Health meeting. "It's absolutely not."

Body artists are required to have a license from the Utah County Health Department, which regulates the sanitary conditions of the shop and requires personnel to undergo training in topics like blood-borne pathogens and how to keep customers safe from risk through proper equipment cleaning and other tasks.

However, those 50 or so unlicensed business owners -- who may be operating out of garages, back rooms or other spaces not set up for the job -- not only do not pay for the required licensure, but also don't generally have sanitary conditions, Shaw said. They draw customers, often minors, with cheap prices and a lack of parental notification. First, she said, minors should not be getting tattoos or body piercings. She knows of 14-year-olds who have gotten their genitals pierced at these illicit businesses.

"I think they should be prosecuted for possible child abuse," Shaw said.

But second, and the main point of concern for the Board of Health, is that, because sanitary conditions aren't guaranteed, people's tattoos and piercings got infected more frequently, and those customers opened themselves up to other infections from dirty equipment, including MRSA, a highly drug-resistant bacteria, and even hepatitis or HIV.

Jason Garrett, the program manager for infectious diseases, said his department took these complaints frequently and were working with a deputy in the sheriff's department as well as a prosecutor in the county attorney's office to both verify that illegal activity was happening and work toward prosecuting it. The second step, however, was proving to be the difficult aspect since they would need to gather evidence to actually take shop owners to court.

The Board of Health considered a number of options for crackdowns, including continuing to work with the sheriff's department to gather evidence on illicit body artists and also notifying cities of these shops, which probably do not have business licenses to operate.

Dr. Joseph Miner, the executive director of the health department, also said they were going to work on creating awareness within the community so that people who wanted tattoos, piercings or permanent cosmetics would know they needed to find a shop with the proper permits to protect themselves.

Man in UK Donates Tattoo Removals

Inflicting Ink and the Traveling Tattoo truck loves to support charities. So when we see someone going above and beyond to help others, it's only natural for us to want to show our support actively. The article below tells the story of a man from the UK who donates his time and expertise to rid people of unwanted tattoos and scarring.

Tattoo removal firm becomes a charity
November 2010
By Barry Nelson

A CHARITY has been launched in the North-East to erase disfiguring skin marks that can ruin lives.

The Human Life Trust is the brainchild of micro-pigmentation technician Barry Crake, whose background in cosmetic services has helped hundreds of sufferers at the Bellissimo surgery he runs with his wife, Michelle, in Sunderland.

Since early last year, Mr Crake has been helping underprivileged people with free scar and tattoo removal.

He found this the work so rewarding that he decided to set up the charity.

Charitable status for the trust was granted in September and, since then, the fundraising has got under way.

The trust – which aims to raise £500,000 by January – has been formed to help alleviate the psychological, physical and social effects of unwanted tattoos, alopecia and other hair loss disorders, scarring and noninfectious skin conditions.

All of these services will be available free of charge to anyone who requires them.

A referral from any individual’s GP is enough to start the process and everyone, from children to pensioners and members of the Armed Forces, is welcome.

The objectives for the Human Life Trust are to alter the outward appearances of individuals to help resolve emotional distress, anxiety or insecurity that the marks on the skin can cause.

“The work we do at the Human Life Trust is fast and effective, and makes a lifetime of difference to people who can be close to despair when they come to us,” said Mr Crake.

“We currently have more than 30 doctor referral letters from clients wanting treatments to improve their lives for a variety of reasons. Sometimes, it is all about moving on and leaving unwelcome reminders of a difficult past behind them. We have removed radiotherapy marks from cancer sufferers and tattoos that abusive partners have inflicted on people as victims of domestic violence.

Such a simple change can be incredibly powerful in giving a person the strength to start their lives over.”

The cash is needed to enable Mr Crake to take on more staff to deal with the increasing number of referrals.

Thanks sent to Inflicting Ink for Rhode Island Blood Center Blood Drive with Cardi's Furniture in South Kingstown, RI

Nov 6, 2010: Rhode Island Blood Center Blood Drive with Cardi's Furniture
Cardi's Furniture, South Kingstown, RI DETAILS

Dear Inflicting Ink Tattoo,

Thank you for sponsoring the Cardi’s Furniture blood drives on November 6th. Your support helped the Rhode Island Blood Center to ensure a safe & adequate blood supply to our hospitals. A total of 42 pints were collected between all 4 locations. Since one pint can save up to three lives, your blood drive potentially benefited up to 126 people in Rhode Island and beyond!
  • South County Commons: 15 (5 sign ups to become bone marrow donors)
  • Swansea: 6
  • South Attleboro: 16
  • West Warwick: 5
Also, the Inflicting Ink event at the South County Commons was a huge success. Not only did we have the 2nd highest collection we have ever had at that drive, we really got the message out that you can donate blood if you have a tattoo in the state of Rhode Island. Below is a link to their facebook page which included some pictures of the event.

http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=14302177#!/album.php?aid=242844&id=91478831050

All blood donations will make a difference in someone’s life. A significant amount of the blood collected at our blood drives will go towards treating children with leukemia, automobile accident victims and patients needing organ transplants. It is because of generous folks like yourself, who host blood drives, that we are able to give hope to patients and their families.

Please extend my thanks to everyone else that helped to make the day a success. It was a pleasure working with you again and I look forward to our next drive. Saturday, February 12th 2011.

Also, I believe Frank and Glenn will be working on a new Providence Journal ad for our 2011 blood drives and will be in touch soon once they have some proofs to show.

Till then, take care.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Siegal

Inflicting Ink Traveling Tattoo and Cardi’s Furniture will Team up to Host a Blood Drive for the Rhode Island Blood Center

South Kingstown, RI. November 6, 2010 --- Inflicting Ink Traveling Tattoo, a one of a kind mobile tattoo studio based out of Portsmouth, RI, will be teaming up with Cardi’s Furniture to host a blood drive for the Rhode Island Blood Center. Jeffrey Goyette, renowned tattoo artist and owner of Inflicting Ink Tattoo Shop, created the traveling studio.

Inflicting Ink Traveling Tattoo will be set up in the South County Commons parking lot near Cardi’s Furniture from 9:30am until all scheduled tattoos are completed. The Rhode Island Blood Center will be on site from 10am-2pm collecting blood donations. The concept of the day will be “give blood while you wait to get tattooed”. Participants can donate blood and either set up a tattoo appointment later in the day (Jeff will decide the amount of time needed in between to ensure safety for all clients) or schedule an appointment at the shop for a later date. Those who donate blood can either have a free Inflicting Ink t-shirt or receive a $10 off coupon for their next tattoo. Individuals may schedule tattoo appointments with Jeff prior to the event, but all walk-ons are welcome.

All attendees do not have to donate blood and/or receive a tattoo. The event is to simply highlight the fact that these two elements can come together. Inflicting Ink and the Rhode Island Blood Center are looking to create awareness about tattooing and donating blood, with hopes of dispelling the myth; “you cannot give blood for a year if you have a tattoo”. This event will take place rain or shine.

Legendary Tattoo Artists to Tattoo Winners in Contest for Jagermeister

Jager For Life - Jagermeister Offers Consumers a Chance to Get Inked from Living Tattoo Legends

SOURCE Jagermeister

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., Aug. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Jagermeister's attitude just got bolder and edgier with the introduction of Jager For Life, the opportunity to turn three lucky winners' bodies into a canvas for three of the world's biggest tattoo stars. Whether they are looking to add to a collection, make up for an embarrassing tat, or get inked for the first time, consumers are now one click away from being inked by a living legend.

Jagermeister is bringing together Mario Barth – the rockstar and undisputed king of Las Vegas tattooing, Josh Lord – of East Side Ink and Ruthless – the hottest new tattoo talent in Los Angeles, three of the most skilled and sought after tattoo artists in the world, to offer consumers a chance to permanently show their dedication to the brand. The three master tattoo artists, known for their expert artistry and year long waiting lists, will be designing their individual interpretations of Jagermeister and its distinctive square green bottle, rich history of myths and legends, and its iconic label featuring a stag and cross. Consumers will then enter for a chance to permanently display one of these works of art on their body. The program kicks off August 27th and runs through December 31st, 2010 when three winners will be selected.

In addition to offering brand loyalists an opportunity to receive ink from a famed tattoo artist, Jager for Life is providing an online platform where consumers can immortalize their ink and showcase their favorite tattoos. Once uploaded, others can view and rate the submitted tattoos as well as share submissions with friends through top social media sites.

Jagermeister has partnered with Inked Magazine, a monthly men's magazine that focuses on the culture, style and art of the rapidly expanding tattoo community, to bring exclusive never seen before video interviews with each of the three artists. Additionally, Jager For Life advertorials will be featured in the September and October issues of Inked.

"We receive thousands of emails from Jagermeister fans with images of their Jagermeister inspired tattoos," says Bill Henderson, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Advertising at Sidney Frank Importing Company, Inc. "We wanted to provide these loyal consumers with something they couldn't normally get – immediate access to three of the top tattoo artists in the world, never before seen Jagermeister ink designs and the opportunity to rock Jager For Life."

World renowned tattoo artist Mario Barth has been tattooing for 30 years, and has won over 200 tattooing awards internationally. His clientele includes Usher, Lenny Kravitz, and Tommy Lee, to name a few. He is currently the chief tattoo artist and owner of the legendary Starlight Tattoo studios in New Jersey and at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, as well as "King Ink - Mario Barth at the Mirage", the first ever tattoo studio and nightclub, located at the Mirage Hotel and Casino.

Josh Lord began tattooing in New York 11 years ago. If Leonardo da Vinci and Charles Darwin had a love child who decided to embark on a career as a tattoo artist, his name would be Josh Lord, whose work often features incredibly detailed anatomical and naturalistic themes. He is the East Coast's artist of the intricate and the owner of two of New York's hottest shops; Graceland and East Side Ink-where A-listers like Rihanna and Daniel Day-Lewis have been tattooed. Lord is also the man Hollywood tapped to create the tattoos for The Last Airbender.

Tattoo's new rising star is Ruthless, and she is not just a pretty face on LA Ink, the girl's got serious tattoo skills. She is a native Angelino who left Los Angeles to apprentice under Tattoo Joe at Physical Graffiti in Connecticut. Then her tattooing took her to Sacred Art Tattoo in Hawaii where she developed her own Eastern-inspired style. Now she has returned home to Los Angeles and become a star working out of American Electric.

RI Tattoo Studio Attended CMA Awards in Nashville

Rhode Island’s Inflicting Ink Traveling Tattoo at the CMA Festival

NASHVILLE, TN, June 10-13, 2010 The Inflicting Ink Traveling Tattoo truck, a mobile tattoo studio based out of Portsmouth RI, traveled to the Country Music Awards festival in Nashville, TN on June 10-13, 2010. The truck was created and built by world renowned tattoo artist Jeff Goyette, who also owns Inflicting Ink Tattoo Studio in Portsmouth RI.

The Country Music Awards festival is a 39 year old annual festival held in Nashville, TN. The festival has particularly special significance right now because of the massive floods that destroyed Nashville earlier this year. A great deal of the proceeds from the event went to support flood relief. Inflicting Ink Traveling Tattoo truck’s attendance at the festival included tattoo artists Jeff Goyette, son Corey Goyette, and special guest artist and owner of Lone Wolf Body Art in Nashville, Ben Dixon, as well as the winners of an all expense paid trip auctioned by Cat Country 98.1 WCTK in Providence, with the proceeds of over $3,000 going to Rhode Island’s flood victims.

“It is an amazing feeling to be able to give back in this way, “ Jeff said of his involvement in the auction and CMA Festival. “I’m really excited for what’s next on our agenda, and what we can ultimately accomplish through this massively misunderstood medium of tattooing.”

While in Nashville, the 78.5 foot mobile studio was parked across the street from LP Field at Limelight Studios where over 50 people were tattooed during the Festival. In addition to bringing extra business the city, the event was filmed for eventual airing in 2011 on the television reality show that is based upon the traveling studio’s story, and will create extra exposure for Nashville in the process as well.

Getting a Safe, Clean, Beautiful Tattoo in Rhode Island

Tattoo artists are required, as members of the Alliance of Professional Tattoo artists, to take courses every two years to update and refresh their skills, and to take a yearly written exam. Jeff Goyette, owner and builder of the Inflicting Ink Traveling Tattoo truck, has been a member of this alliance since 1993, and suggests that his artists not only take the yearly exam, but become members of the alliance as well.

How safe is too safe when you're considering getting a tattoo? According to Jeff, there is no such thing as too safe. The Department of Health in the State of Rhode Island called his methods of sterilization and his procedures for securing cross-contamination issues an 'unnecessary precaution' because they were so far above and beyond the state standards for the same issues. Jeff does not feel that you can ever be too safe when you are dealing with someone else's health and welfare.

In fact, upon an inspection of the Traveling Tattoo truck from the Department of Facility Regulations, it was determined that the Inflicting Ink Tattoo Studio and Traveling Tattoo truck practices will set the standard for new tattoo stations within the State. This department stated that the traveling truck was the “best tattoo studio they had ever seen”.

The Inflicting Ink Traveling Tattoo truck employs the same or better sterilization and environment practices that most hospitals employ, including foot pedals on all appliances eliminating the need for artists to use their hands to touch anything, ensuring that all autoclaves are spore tested monthly and that reports are filed with the Department of Health, employing only those artists that are licensed and certified in cross contamination and blood-born pathogens, the use of infrared technology and maintenance of a highly sterile environment.

While in most instances traveling tattoo tours are required to perform periodic licensing throughout the year in the states in which they plan to operate, Inflicting Ink Traveling Tattoo truck has been granted a year round facility license status in every state it carries a license for, making it the first traveling tattoo studio to be granted this type of license in the United States.
